Celebration of the 70th Anniversary of His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej’s Accession to the Throne

On 9 – 10 September 2016, the Royal Thai Embassy in Bern organized various activities in celebration of the 70th Anniversary of His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej’s Accession to the Throne.   

On 9 September 2016, the Embassy together with the Permanent Mission of Thailand to UN and the Permanent Mission of Thailand to WTO in Geneva with the kind support of Canton of Vaud and City of Lausanne held a Special Public Lecture by H.E. Mr. Tej Bunnag, Former Minister of Foreign Affairs of Thailand on “His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej: 70 Years of Sustainable Development for Thailand and the World” at Palais de Rumine, Lausanne. The talk highlighted His Majesty’s role in promoting rural development in Thailand with his theory of sufficiency economy and the reference from His Majesty’s more than 18 years of living in Switzerland as well as the international recognition He has received for his works for the people over 70 years on the throne.                       

On this auspicious occasion, the Royal Thai Embassy presented a collection of books on His Majesty’s life and works, the theory of Sufficiency Economy, and Thailand as a gift to the Cantonal and University of Lausanne Public Libraries.  Nestle and OMEGA, which both have had long-established business with Thailand, also joined in the celebration by contributing scholarships for Thai students to further their studies in training in Switzerland.  During this event, His Majesty’s very own music compositions were performed by Mrs. Thanamas Chalermnon. The exhibition on His Majesty’s life in Switzerland was also displayed with the support the Swiss Alumni Association, Thailand.

Mr. Pascal Broulis, Councillor and Head of the Department of Finance and External Relations, Canton of Vaud, and Mr. Grégoire Junod, Mayor of Lausanne, were the guests of honour at the event, while around 200 guests participated from the diplomatic corps from Bern and Geneva as well as various sectors of Switzerland.

Later on 10 September 2016, the Royal Thai Embassy in cooperation with Srinagarindravararam Temple, Gretzenbach, held another special talk by H.E. Mr. Tej Bunnag for the Thai community.  Many Thais and their families participated in the event to celebrate this auspicious occasion of their beloved King.
