E-Passport
General Information
- Thai nationals who are permanent residents or long-term residents in Switzerland or Liechtenstein whose passports have expired, are about to expire, are damaged, lost, or require updates (such as name or surname changes) can make an online appointment to apply for a new passport at the Royal Thai Embassy in Bern
- The personal information in the passport is based on the applicant’s most recent record in the Thai civil registration system. If you wish to have your new passport issued under new surname after marriage, you must first update your civil registration information at the district office (Amphur) or local registration office in Thailand before applying for a new passport.
- Passports are valid for 5 years or 10 years, and cannot be renewed within the same passport.
- You are advised to apply for a new passport at least 6 months before your current one expires.
- Thai nationals born in Switzerland or Liechtenstein are eligible to apply for their first passport at the Embassy. Afterward, they must be registered in a household registration (Tabien Baan) and obtain a Thai national ID card. The first Thai ID card can only be made in Thailand.
- If you have previously held a Thai passport but have never had a Thai ID card, you cannot apply for a new passport at the Embassy. You must travel to Thailand to obtain your first ID card. In such cases, the Embassy can issue an Emergency Travel Document (ETD) to facilitate your travel back to Thailand.
- For minors under 20 years old, both parents listed on the birth certificate must sign a consent form in person before the officer. Exceptions apply if a parent is deceased, divorced, or has sole custody, in which case supporting documents must be presented. The minor must already be listed in the Thai household registration before they can apply for a second passport.
- The electronic passport stores biometric data — including a facial photograph, iris scan, and fingerprints — in a contactless integrated circuit chip embedded in the passport. Therefore, applicants must appear in person to apply.
- The production and delivery of a new passport from Thailand takes approximately 4–6 weeks.
- If your passport is lost and you need to urgently travel back to Thailand, please contact the Passport Section at +41 (0)31 970 3414–15
